Student entrepreneurs at NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (SEECS) came up with the idea of an automated bicycle hiring system for the university campus. “CyKiq” is the bicycle system that aims to provide approximately 200 bicycles for a safe, reliable, and economical hiring service to NUST students, employees and campus residents. This has reduced the greenhouse gas emissions to a greater extent. Also, the campus offers Careem/Uber services plus shuttle services to its employees and students to reduce the number of cars driven to the campus on an individual basis. Each vehicle driven on the behalf of NUST is monitored on monthly basis to check if there is any malfunctioning which can cause air pollution. For zero emissions policy, two electric shuttle services are also available. Seven additional electric vehicles are under procurement process. Pedestrian paths are designed for safety, convenience and in some parts provided with disabled friendly features. It is important to reduce the risk of collisions and to produce an environment in which both pedestrians and cyclists feel safe while using. Pedestrian policy of NUST focuses on easing congestion, reducing noise pollution, reducing vehicle speeds (up to 40 km/hr.), street lighting, improving visibility, beautification, connectivity, and zoning of green areas.
